Hi David Evans, here from Passage Rock Winery

Today, I’m going to talk to you about our Pinot Gris. These are Pinot Gris grapes and they’ve got little tiny, berries and quite fat, berries and they’re just ripening up now, so these ones are about 2 weeks away from being ready to make into wine and right now they taste really delicious they’re a little bit sweet.

But a little bit sour, they taste a bit like a green apple that Pinot Gris gets made into this white here. So this is our 2023 Pinot Gris and

This is a kind of a new release, but we’re nearly finished selling out. So it’s a really popular wine at the moment. I think a lot of people like it, because it’s kind of got a an agreeable, aroma and it’s not too acidic, and it’s not too tangy.

So I think Pinot Gris is a really good non offensive wine for your dinner parties. So we’ve been making this for about 18 years, so the wine we make it in a dry style. So when I say dry, that means absence of sugar and we also make it in a slightly lower alcohol version.

So when you swirl it, you can see, the wine is beautifully vibrant, so the color is really bright and crisp, and when I swirl it, it doesn’t throw a lot of legs. So that’s an indication that alcohol a bit lighter now, I’m swirling it around so that the aroma gets released into this top part of the glass. When I smell it, it smells like, freshly cut, pear a little hint of guava and a nice citrusy tang to it on the palate.

It’s got a really lovely front impact, so it coats your tongue really beautifully and it’s got a nice long finish. So the finish goes on for about 30 seconds and basically the whole time, It’s a really pleasant aroma, so a really pleasant taste and it’s not sweet and it’s not clawing.

So some wines, some Pinot Gris in new zealand, are really sweet and that can make the finish like a little bit ploy, and that means after first glass, you can’t have a second. One, more element about this vineyard, it’s kind of a little hidden secret. So when you smell our Pinot Gris, there is the extra element of spice. But if you look at the trees behind me, there’s a very tall set of eucalyptus trees and I don’t know if any of you ever smell the roots of eucalyptus trees.

But that gives a little slight eucalyptus character. So, if you’re ever looking in a blind tasting of Pinot Gris and Passage Rock wines happens to be in there. If you smell an element of eucalyptus, that’s going to be the hidden secret! Anyway, cheers enjoy the wine.
